In the fall of 2003, Trinity Memorial Church opened The HAVEN, an after
school program for high school young people. This program has been created
to provide a safe and nurturing environment for youth, empowering them
to achieve healthy educational, physical, emotional, social and spiritual
growth.
The HAVEN is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:35 p.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year.
HAVEN is working in conjunction with Binghamton High School, and other
community agencies.
The HAVEN
staff works one-on-one to establish individual goals and objectives,
and in groups to educate and facilitate healthy growth in education, physical
fitness, emotions, social settings, and spirituality.
Tutoring
and counseling are available. Evaluations of individual growth
take place periodically during the year, along with pre- and post-
testing for measurable outcomes.
A requirement for participation is for students to be actively participating
in education: High School, GED, or any other secondary school setting.
Six areas
of activity are offered:
-

including tutoring
-
Life
Skills, including drug prevention training
-

The Search
Institute Assets Awareness Program, initiated by Binghamton City School
District Superintendent Dr. Peggy Wozniak, assesses the 40 assets that
indicate a young person’s likelihood of having a healthy lifestyle.
This material forms the backbone of the HAVEN program with the intention
of increasing assets of each young person involved.
Pizza
Lunch
Staff and volunteers at Trinity provide a pizza lunch one day a week for
Binghamton High School students. In addition to pizza, Trinity provides
a safe and warm place to play basketball, walk the labyrinth, play video
games and musical instruments, study or just talk.
