HAVEN

Working Together to Empower Our Youth

The HAVEN, an after school program for high school young people, was begun at Trinity Memorial in the fall of 2003. Our location across the street from Binghamton High School makes ours a very accessible site.

The mission of the HAVEN is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for youth in grades 9-12. This unique after school program--established in partnership with parents, schools, community, business and government-- benefits high school students by empowering them to achieve health and growth.

The HAVEN is open to youth in grades 9-12 who are attending school. The program is free of charge to participants and their families. The HAVEN program is held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:35 p.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year.

In addition to providing a safe and fun learning environment, the HAVEN is able to make students aware of the multitude of resources already available to them by providing a series of speakers.

HAVEN Programming

The HAVEN hopes to achieve its goals and enrich the lives of participants by providing programming in five major areas:

  1. Educational Support
  2. Participants work on homework and other projects. Math tutoring, literacy skills help and remedial work in some academic areas are also available. A computer lab is available to all participants.

  3. Recreation
  4. Trinity Church has a large indoor gymnasium where the teens can participate in basketball and volleyball games. HAVEN participants also can play pool and various board games.

  5. Life and Social Skills

This program area helps develop psychological and social coping skills, including conflict resolution, anger management, self-esteem, working in groups, and vocational or career planning.

  6. Creative Self Expression

Teens can learn to play a variety of musical instruments, such as guitar, keyboard and drums. Various art projects encourage participants to experiment with painting and other art forms.

  7. Outreach and Community Service
  8. Participants are encouraged to learn about the community and how they can make a difference and give something back to those around them.
