Ministers of the Liturgy
Acolytes assist in worship as cross bearers, torch bearers, Gospel bearers, and banner bearers. They assist at the presentation and receiving of the gifts of the people and they assist in the preparation of communion.Young parishioners and adults serve as acolytes.
Worship Leaders are laypersons licensed to assist in the service. They read the Prayers of the People at Eucharist and the Suffrages at Morning Prayer. They assist in the preparation of the altar and administer the chalice at Eucharist.
Lectors are laypersons who read the Scripture lessons at worship services. We have a corps of "young voices" who read the first lesson at the 10 a.m. service. They meet with the interim rector on Saturday afternoon to rehearse their reading and study the Scripture passage.
Eucharistic Ministers are lay men and women who are authorized to adminster the Consecrated Elements at a Celebration of Holy Eucharist.
A Eucharistic Minister must
- be a baptized, confirmed or received communicant of the Episcopal Church
- be an active member of the parish
- have taken Safe Church training
- be approved by the parish priest, and
- be licensed by the diocesan bishop
Eucharistic Visitors visit the ill and homebound and take Communion to them. The requirements to be a Eucharistic Visitor are the same as those for Eucharistice Ministers.
Healing Ministers offer prayers and laying on of hands for healing. The Healing Rite is administered during communion two or three times each month at both services. Additionally, the Rite of Healing is incorporated in the liturgy on the fifth Sunday.
Altar Guild is responsible for setting up the altar for worship services. They care for the Communion elements, vessels, and linens. Members of the Altar Guild divide altar flowers after worship and take them to homebound parishioners, or those celebrating birthdays.
Ushers are responsible for greeting and welcoming worshipers. They provide a bulletin for the service and directions to available seats. They gather the offering and direct movement of people at communion. After worship, ushers straighten up and prepare for the next service. Ushers work in teams, serving approximately once a month.
Counters assist with counting the weekly offering receipts.
