Timothy Edward Smith

Our Music Director

Timothy Edward Smith has rejoined our staff as Organist & Choirmaster in September 2025.

He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from Wheaton College and a Master of Music degree in Church Music and Organ from Northwestern University. He was also the first in the school’s history to earn the Artist’s Diploma in Organ Performance from the Boston Conservatory.

Timothy Smith was affiliate organist and assistant to Daniel Pinkham at King’s Chapel in Boston, and he served as music director of the Harvard Pro Musica choral society.

As a church musician, Tim has served a variety of churches in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Ohio. He has led both volunteer and professional choirs and has conducted numerous works for chorus and orchestra. He served recently as Music Director at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Annapolis, Maryland.

His concert career has included a dozen appearances at annual conventions of the Organ Historical Society, several of which have been rebroadcast nationally on Pipedreams, and two appearances with The Boston Symphony Orchestra under Director Seiji Ozawa.

He has released three compact discs on the Raven label, including a program of French music entitled “Pipes and Angels,” recorded in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Tim is the Executive Director of the Portageville Chapel Board. The Portageville Chapel, located in upstate New York, provides a place where organists can retreat for a week of uninterrupted practice in a private rehearsal facility to restore their artistry and explore the splendor of the Genesee Valley.

He is also the owner of Chesapeake Organ Service, serving the Mid-Atlantic region, New York, and New England.
